When you think of play, then chances are that you don’t think about how play can be a learning tool for children. However, the truth of the matter is, that learning can be a great way for kids to learn and develop.
Not sure that you understand how play can be a learning tool? Well, we have put together our 5 benefits for learning through play.
It encourages communication
Children’s speech and language develops at different rates. You may not always know the best way to get them talking more, but what you may not realise is that play could be the answer that you are looking for. Playing means that they will often need to express themselves, which encourages their communication skills. It also helps them to express emotions and understand different roles, which can also be a big help.
It ignites their imagination
Sometimes, as parents, you can find yourself in awe of the sheer level of imagination that your child has. Play is the biggest driving force behind imagination and is something that we definitely should encourage more. Get them to think of different scenarios and act them out. This could be realistic things, or perhaps something far-fetched. There really is no limit to what their imagination can come up with.
It improves motor skills
Having to grab and move toys around is one of the best ways to develop your child’s fine motor skills, particularly if this an area that you are finding they struggle with. Not only this, but, if they find that toys they want are not close at hand, then you can get them to move themselves closer to it. Great if they are delayed with their walking or crawling.
It helps them to build friendships and relationships
There is no better person for a child to play with than another child. This means that they can really explore new approaches to imaginative play and get ideas from one another. It is also a great way to encourage them to work on their social skills, their concept of sharing and also help them to learn how to build friendships too. All of these things are valuable tools for when they are at school, and of course for later life too.
It gives you the chance to play together
As parents, we are all guilty of being busy, sometimes too busy to get down on the floor with our kids and play. However, we should all recognise that sometimes playtime is a great way to have some time with your child. Sure, they should be able to play independently, but there really is no harm every now and then to getting down on the carpet and playing with them.
So, now you know, playing is more than just playing. It is a chance to get your child learning and developing. No matter what they choose to play with, or how, make sure that this is something you encourage and you should soon see the benefits.
